Shaken and Stirred

The massive earthquake and resulting tsunami in Japan and the surrounding areas has left many both shaken and stirred. We've seen big disasters in the past few years (among them the Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, Haiti earthquake) and it is always heartwrenching to see the death and suffering. However, those who step up and do something to help out is always heartwarming.

Disasters will happen. What is our attitude about it? Do you feel for the people? Do you offer help? Do you think it is "the will of God"? Are you blase? Do you pray?

Prayer and action should be our stance each and every day. We can't just rush into "doing" without seeking guidance and also centering ourselves. I need that flow of grace before I get busy. Otherwise I tend to set my own agenda. This can result in self will run riot...even with good intentions.

Sorry to see that Glenn Beck (radio talk show host) came back from vacation with what I consider a flippant remark (here). He implied that maybe God has something to do with these disasters. Really?

I think the actions of many of us have consequences that are less than favorable. But I don't believe that a God who is love uses massive natural disasters to punish us. Yes, this requires rethinking some of the Old Testament. Through the ages we've attempted to interpret cataclysmic events and sometimes attributing it to God's righteous wrath. Personally, I think God is more involved inspiring people to do something to help those who are hurt and suffering. The work of saints is offering food, water, shelter, medical attention, kind words and forgiveness and so on (Matthew 25:31-46). I'm just saying.
